Cannonball Adderley listening to playback, Harlem, ca. 1962
Kwame Brathwaite’s earliest photographs are those he took in jazz clubs in New York City the he and his friends and family founded and frequented. Here Brathwaite depicts the great jazz alto saxophonist Julian Edward “Cannonball” Adderley (1928-1975) contemplating a recent performance in an extraordinarily intimate instance of a great artist experiencing their own art.
